Car Rental and Driving in Exuma

If you are staying for more than a few days, you will probably want to hire a car, either simply for shopping, or to explore the wonderful countryside. There are several local car hire companies both at the airport and near Georgetown.

Contrary to expectations, driving in Exuma is quite relaxed experience. Local roads are generally good in the area and most cars drive at no more than 40 mph /70 kph, or less.  As there is really only one road on the island, it is actually impossible to get lost! The island is about 40 miles long in all, but a car does allow you reach some of the more remote settlements and places of interest. As The Bahamas were a British territory until Independence, driving is on the left, but a lot of the cars to rent are left hand drive, so you need to know your right from your left!

Our favourite drive is to Barraterre, about 40 hour from Driftwood Apartments. You get a fantastic flavour of Exuma en route, through beautiful scenery and finish at an amazing beach - not good for swimming but simply stunning in its sense of isolation.

Other places to see include Little Exuma, with the famous Santana’s Beach Bar (where actors from Pirates of the Caribbean used to chill out), the salt pans, the beautiful West side of the island, where you won’t see a soul…
